It’s a long story, would not bother me if you choose to skim:My bike was stolen from outside my work way back in November. It had been garaged for about fifteen years. I fell in love instantly. I took it into my local bike shop, and had a difficult time waiting for the tune up to finish. I must have walked by the store three days in a row! My first serious bike, and it fit me perfectly. I have a difficult time finding bikes that do. I’m very short and get mistaken for being in high school all the time. That bike took me down bike routs, over bridges, to my first job, on several late night rendezvous, and into a new level of young adulthood and worldly consciousness (That might sound really stupid to say, but I’m sure most members of our wonderful bike community understand it.) I was even hit by a car on the bike, that was pretty insane and incredibly lucky, the bike and I walked/rolled away from the accident with one spilled coffee, a permanent hip scuff, chipped paint, and a partially broken pedal to our left sides. Nothing was severely harmed or damaged and I decided to let the elderly couple that hit me go without exchanging information or reporting them (I’m actually not that cool, I was in shock from the impact and kept rambling about how I was late for a theater production meeting and my director was going to kill me!) But, I do believe in karma(lol) and felt it would be wrong to try and get money out of people when I didn’t need it.

The night my Trek was stolen, I filed a police report and registered it to the stolen bike registry. I began spouting out every detail about the bike, pointing out all the modifications that had been made to it, the bike shop it had originated from in California, the matching paint chip markings from old pictures of the bike that I had saved on my phone (including the maintenance picture I took at the bike shop that was now helping me to recover my bike.) I even went as far as pulling up my shirt and showing them the matching “scuffs” the bike and I shared on our left sides. It was the break petals that convinced them, I told them how I had chipped the right one leaning over too far on some pavement the first day I ever rode it and that the left one had been broken in my accident. The man said, “There’s no way you could have known that about the pedals.” and that was all the convincing I needed to do.
